Women’s Jiu Jitsu

Jiu Jitsu is an invaluable self defense tool for women.  Assaults on women typically involve grabbing and holding and jiu jitsu provides an arsenal of techniques to defend and counter such attacks.  Perhaps even more importantly, women who train in jiu jitsu become comfortable with physicality through their training (often against bigger and stronger training partners) and project a confidence that reduces their chances of being targeted in the first place.

Oneonta Jiu Jitsu Academy offers two women’s classes: (1) a monthly free self defense class for all women in the community, and (2) a weekly women’s team class for all of our female members.

Our women’s self defense class is free and open to all women of any age in the community.  The class meets on the first Friday of each month and provides introductory self defense techniques from the Gracie curriculum.

Our women’s team class meets each Saturday morning and focuses on a wider range of jiu jitsu techniques, including sport Jiu Jitsu as well as self defense.  This class is particularly useful as a stepping stone for many women as it allows women who initially became interested through the self defense class to begin regularly training Jiu Jitsu in a women-only environment, before transitioning to mixed gender classes.
